The big picture:
Cutting charcoal use is one of the most effective ways of reducing deforestation in developing countries. 3 billion people cook on open fires and dirty cookstoves every day and 4.3 million people die from indoor pollution every year. Efficient cookstoves allow families in rural areas to cook food using less charcoal.
How It Works:
The Jikokoa cookstove is one of the most efficient of its kind, cutting down on smoke and soot by around 50% compared to the widely used Kenya ceramic jiko, helping to protect forests and cutting 170,000 tonnes of CO2 a year.
The Project:
BURN won the 2015 Ashden Clean Energy for Women and Girls Award. Since 2013, Burn have sold over 543,112 stoves. These stoves have changed the lives of 3 Million people, saving them over $151 million.
BURN is growing a network of partners to provide credit representing over a third of sales. As well as traditional micro-finance organisations, finance partners include M-Kopa and Equity Bank.
